Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in North Las Vegas
Ronin Jiu Jitsu has years of experience teaching the people of North Las Vegas the techniques, methodology, and philosophy of awareness and inner calm that is the core of jiu-jitsu.
What is Jiu-jitsu?Jiu-jitsu is a martial art which uses the opponent’s own strength against them rather than pitting one’s strength directly against the adversary. The main focus of jiu-jitsu is not striking but in grappling your opponent into submission.
What is the history of jiu-jitsu?Jiu-jitsu has a very long and rich history, but it may be beneficial for newcomers to understand the reason this martial art was born. First, the rough translation of the terms from Japanese is Jiu= gentle and jitsu = technique or art. The “gentle art” was developed to subdue and defeat armed and armored opponents; using the weight of the armor and the momentum of the weapons to put an attacker off balance and open for countermeasures. The focus was on defeating samurai who held advantages due to their equipment. Later, due to the influence of Neo-Confucianism and its distaste for war, armor and weapons became largely decorative. Jiu-jitsu continued developing into a martial art that focused on encounters with unarmed and unarmored opponents.
What are the benefits of jiu-jitsu?Why do so many people study jiu-jitsu? Here is why.
Mixed Martial Arts Classes in North Las Vegas
Traditional martial arts are often divided into strike based fighting (e.g. karate, taekwondo, and boxing) and grappling (jiu-jitsu, judo, and wrestling). This would leave fighters at a disadvantage because they were trained in either midrange or close range techniques. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) was created to merge these two fighting archetypes into a single art form.
Do people learn MMA just for fighting?MMA is so well know because it has led many competitors to victory in the octagon; other forms of traditional martial arts do not often defeat competitors with an MMA background. But MMA is not meant only for competitors. If you are interested in learning a style of fighting and getting into shape then why not choose the most well rounded martial art? Why not choose MMA?
MMA gives you the knowledge to handle almost any situation. Boxing and kickboxing teach you how to strike, block, dodge, and perform standing grapples. If you’re brought to the ground, then you can rely on jiu-jitsu and wrestling to help you out. MMA can be learned for self-defense purposes just as easily as it can be used for sparring. Many of our North Las Vegas students of MMA never go into competitions; instead they use the training to enhance themselves.
Why learn MMA?There are many reasons to train in MMA. Here are the ones that our North Las Vegas students mention most frequently.
Mix martial arts:
Mix martial arts is a full contact sport that got its name bye utilizes all styles of fighting. Using Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, kickboxing, boxing, judo and wrestling to win a fight. The Ufc is probably the Platform that really started to make the term popular. When UFC first fist combined the different styles of martial arts, fighters quickly realized they needed to start cross training to be successful. They quickly realized that Brazilian jiu-jitsu was extremely effective for the ground, wrestling was dominating the the clinch and takedown. Kickboxing ( muay Thai) had the most success for the striking. This then began the evolution of mix martial arts or the more commonly used MMA.

Muay Thai / Kickboxing Classes in Las Vegas
What is Muay Thai/ kickboxingMuay Thai (Thai Boxing) originated in Thailand from the older martial art of Muay boran which means “ancient boxing”. Muay boran is an umbrella term constituting a number of traditional Thai styles of martial arts and Muay Thai is a style of fighting that is influenced and structured by these traditions.
The main precept of Muay Thai is mastering the eight sticking points of the body; Muay Thai is often referred to as “the art of the eight limbs”. Fists, elbows, knees and shins/feet are used for a variety of strikes combined with grappling while standing. The grappling allows Muay Thai practitioners to be very effective at close range which is one reason why Thai boxing is a great foundation for mixed martial arts practitioners.
Are Muay Thai and kickboxing the same?Kickboxing and Muay Thai are actually two different martial arts. Kickboxing, as a contact sport, was historically developed from karate, Muay Thai, taekwondo and western boxing in the 1960 and 1970s. The main differences are that kickboxing matches do not allow grappling, hits below the belt or strikes with the elbows or knees. Essentially it can be viewed as such: Kickboxing can be used as a general term referring to a variety of Indochinese fighting systems, of which Muay Thai is one. It can also be used to refer to the North American sport of kickboxing.
Why train in Muay Thai?Ronin Jiu Jitsu gets this question quite often from the people of Las Vegas who are interested in being more active and learning a new skill set.
